“In June, I started my internship with Mick Gugel, the head metallurgist at Steel Warehouse. We toured our South Bend plants and visited customers and vendors to get a comprehensive understanding of the steel industry supply chain and Steel Warehouse’s role within it. For a couple days I worked with quality improvement, analyzing customer complaints, identifying root causes and developing effective solutions. Mick also gave me insight into his daily responsibilities, allowing me to work alongside him on various tasks.
I’ve now transitioned to working with Kyle Bantz at JH Jones, Steel Warehouse’s engineering department. He’s providing me with a hands-on introduction to the world of
engineering. I’ve learned to use design software and create prints for the machine shop. Tomorrow, I’ll be getting my hands dirty in the shop, working with machines and tools.
This internship has been incredibly informative, teaching me more than I ever imagined about steel and our family business.”
—Nathan Lerman (Aaron Lerman)
"I can’t begin to describe how incredibly educational this short internship was.
After hours of self-training, I learned how to use
Solidworks, a skill that I will carry with me. I even created prints of a Stirling Engine and V Block.
I also got to understand how engineering works in the bigger picture of Steel Warehouse. We went through the shop, and I learned about all the machines, and we went to plant #2 where I got to see even more machines.
On Monday last week I got to attend the Engineering meeting and I heard about everyone’s projects and how they fit into the grand scheme of things.
And the entire time I felt like my questions were being answered and I was being adequately challenged."
